New Puppy & Kitten To-Do Checklist

Welcoming a new furry family member is exciting—and a little chaotic at times! We’re here to help your puppy or kitten get the very best start. From first vaccines and deworming to monthly flea and heartworm protection, we make sure all the essentials are covered. We’ll also walk you through those adorable-but-sometimes-frustrating behaviors so your little one can grow into a happy, well-adjusted companion.

Home Safety Prep
  • Puppy/kitten-proof your home (secure cords, toxins, and small objects).
  • Provide a safe, cozy space for rest. Crate training early is helpful.
  • Use baby gates or pens as needed for supervision.
Establish a Routine
  • Set consistent feeding, potty, play, and sleep schedules.
  • Monitor behavior, habits, and overall development.
Schedule the Initial Veterinary Exam
  • Book your puppy/kitten’s first veterinary visit within the first week.
  • Bring any previous records, breeder/shelter information, and microchip details. E-mailing records ahead of time is helpful: reception@muirfieldanimalhospital.com.
  • Submit a fresh stool sample for parasite screening and begin routine deworming.
  • Start the vaccination series as recommended—boosters are typically needed every 3–4 weeks until 16 weeks old.
  • Begin monthly parasite prevention (flea/tick and heartworm). Consistent, year-round protection is essential for young pets.
  • Nutrition & Feeding: Choose a high-quality puppy or kitten diet. We can guide you on how much to feed, how often, and when to transition foods. Avoid table scraps.
Microchip & ID
  • Confirm your pet is microchipped—or schedule one during a visit.
  • Register or update the microchip with your current contact information.
  • Use a collar and ID tag with your phone number.
Spay/Neuter Planning
  • Discuss ideal timing with your veterinarian.
  • Plan surgery based on recommended age, breed, and lifestyle.
Socialization, Training & Grooming
  • Introduce your pet to safe people, places, and positive experiences.
  • Begin crate training and positive reinforcement basics.
  • Provide scratching posts for kittens and appropriate chew toys for puppies.
  • Consider daycare/socialization options such as KAMP Dog Lodge or Hayden Run Animal Lodge.
  • Help your pet get comfortable with nail trims, brushing, ear checks, and bathing.
Know When to Reach Out to Us

Adult & Senior Pet Care Checklist

Adult and Senior Pet Care Checklist, Muirfield Animal Hospital

As pets get older, regular checkups become more important than ever. We recommend a comprehensive physical exam at least once a year—and sometimes more often depending on your pet’s needs. These exams may include routine bloodwork, vaccinations, and health screenings to catch any changes early.

Continued monthly heartworm and flea prevention remains essential for keeping adult pets healthy and happy. Our team is here to help your senior companions enjoy their golden years with comfort, vitality, and plenty of tail wags.

Schedule Annual Exams
  • Bring your adult or senior pet in for a full physical exam at least once a year—or more frequently if recommended by your veterinarian.
  • Discuss any changes in behavior, appetite, weight, or mobility.
  • Review any ongoing medications or health concerns.
Routine Bloodwork & Screenings
  • Perform routine bloodwork to monitor organ function and detect early signs of disease.
  • Consider additional screenings (urinalysis, thyroid, or blood pressure checks) for senior pets.
  • Early detection helps keep your pet healthy and active.
Vaccinations
  • Keep vaccinations up to date to protect against preventable diseases.
  • Your veterinarian will tailor a vaccine schedule based on your pet’s age, lifestyle, and health status.
Monthly Parasite Prevention
  • Continue heartworm and flea/tick prevention year-round.
  • Parasite protection remains crucial for adult and senior pets’ overall health.
Nutrition & Weight Management
  • Feed a balanced diet appropriate for your pet’s age, breed, and activity level.
  • Monitor weight and body condition; adjust feeding as needed.
  • Discuss supplements or special diets with your veterinarian if required.
